When NASA climatologist James Hansen testified before the US Senate in 1988 that the greenhouse effect caused by human activity was changing the climate, he set off alarm bells, although much of the scientific community remained naturally sceptical, awaiting further evidence. Today, the scientific consensus on anthropogenic climate change is virtually 100%; science has now closed this debate. But the road to what is now considered scientific certainty has been long and arduous.
