On 28 November 1660, the creation of what would shortly afterwards be called The Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge, better known simply as the Royal Society, was announced. As a British academy of sciences, this organisation, considered to be the oldest national scientific institution in the world, has been one of the fundamental pillars of science throughout its more than three and a half centuries of existence. Here we retrace the chronology of the main pioneering scientific institutions that have made great discoveries, founded research centres or sponsored expeditions that explored the ends of our planet.
